The fourth installment of the Aranmanai series, titled Baak in Telugu, stars Sundar. C, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Raashii Khanna in pivotal roles. Let’s see how this horror thriller fares.
Story:
Shiva Shankar (Sundar C) is a sincere lawyer whose life takes a shocking turn when he discovers his sister Shivani (Tamannaah) has committed suicide. As he delves deeper, he uncovers mysteries surrounding her death and that of her husband. The film follows Shiva Shankar’s journey to unravel these dark secrets.
Pros:
Baak impresses with its technical finesse, boasting high production values and stunning visuals. The horror effects are well-executed, complemented by a gripping background score from Hip Hop Tamizha.
The narrative gains momentum before the interval with a series of intriguing events, maintaining curiosity throughout. Sundar C delivers a compelling performance, while Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashii Khanna leave a notable impact.
Cons:
The film’s downfall lies in its reliance on clichés, particularly in its inclusion of unnecessary comedy tracks. These moments disrupt the film’s tone and dilute its impact. The plot, though well-connected, offers nothing novel, following a predictable trajectory.
Post the revelation, the film’s pace slows down, creating a lag in the second half. The climax feels underwhelming, and certain scenes could have been trimmed for a tighter edit.
Technical Aspects:
Baak shines in its technical departments, especially in cinematography and background score. However, the editing could have been sharper to enhance the pacing.
Director Sundar C’s narration fluctuates between engaging and irritating, particularly in the handling of comedy sequences, which often feel out of place.
Verdict:
Despite its technical prowess, Baak falls short due to its routine storyline and excessive comedy. While the horror elements impress, the film’s predictability and pacing issues make it an underwhelming watch.
